Jean Tweed is a leading, community-based organization that provides a supportive environment for women with substance use, mental health, and gambling concerns. Recognizing the diversity of women’s experience in today’s society, our programs seek to address a range of issues in a woman’s life that may contribute to substance use and gambling concerns.
The Jean Tweed Centre is building capacity to transform the level of support for women with substance use, mental health, and gambling concerns.
Program Summary
The Child Development Centre provides a warm and nurturing environment for children to play and learn, alongside achieving their developmental milestones.
How will you help us get there:
The Early Childhood Assistant provides direct support to promote the physical, emotional and cognitive development of children.
The position involves assisting with the design of engaging activities, preparing snacks for children, organizing rooms and arranging furniture, watching children and submitting written observations, and encouraging children in good hygiene practices.
Service
- Assist in carrying out programs that promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children.
- Demonstrate an understanding and ability to adhere to expectations from the Ministry of Education, Toronto Children’s Services and Toronto Public Health.
- Engage children in activities by telling stories, teaching songs and preparing crafts.
- Prepare snacks and arrange rooms or furniture for lunch and rest periods.
- Assist with encouraging proper eating, dressing and toilet habits among children.
- Submit written observations on children to Early Childhood Educator for assessment.
- Maintain childcare equipment and assist in housekeeping or kitchen duties.
- Interact with parents and respond to any basic questions about the behaviour of children.
- Monitor the environment and take measures to promote safety and well-being of children, e.g. wiping spills, using disinfectant to clean toys, and cleaning tables.
- Attend staff meetings to discuss progress and problems of children.
Organizational
- Conduct job responsibilities with a commitment to harm reduction, trauma- informed, women-centred and anti-oppressive practices.
- Abide by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and work in a manner that is safe, reporting incidents immediately to direct supervisor.
- Adhere to the policies and procedures of The Jean Tweed Centre.
- Perform other duties as assigned in order to meet the overall goals and objectives of The Jean Tweed Centre.
- Maintain a Client Service Orientation including learning about and addressing client needs and concerns.

Pay: $18 per hour
Location: 215 Evans Ave., Etobicoke, ON M8Z 1J5
Hours of Work: The hours of work are 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday.
Requirements
- Diploma in Early Childhood Education.
- Emergency first aid, CPR training level C.
- Up-to-date Immunizations.
- Proof of two step TB test.
- A current and clear Police Vulnerable Sector check.
- Experience in Childcare is an asset.
- Working knowledge of Child Abuse theory.
- Early Childhood Education Assistant certificate program or post-secondary courses may be required.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person with children, parents and co-workers.
- Ability to multi-task and keep up with the monitoring of children.
- Ability to keep notes of observations about children.
