About the role:
The Hospital strives to deliver care that is centred on patients
and families. Patient and Family Centred Care (PFCC)
is the provision of care that is respectful of, and responsive to

The Nurse Practitioner (NP), Cardiothoracic reports to the
Director of Surgery and Ambulatory Services and has a
matrix relationship to the Director of Nursing Practice. The NP is
an expert practitioner with a specialty‑based focus
who functions with a high level of autonomy, with advanced
knowledge and decision‑making skills to form clinical
decisions to manage the health care of patients through an
interdisciplinary team approach. The Advanced Practice
Nurse functions within 6 competencies in accordance to the
Canadian Nurses Association; Direct comprehensive
care, Optimizing health systems, Education, Leadership,
Consultation and Collaboration and Research. The
percentage of time dedicated to each of these domains is variable,
based on the program's needs and will evolve
with the program.
The Cardiothoracic Nurse Practitioner s primary focus is on the
provision and coordination of health care for patients
with complex cardiothoracic‑related diagnoses. This includes
but is not limited to delivery of care to patients requiring
pre/post open aortic surgical repairs, lower extremity occlusive
disease repair, endovascular aneurysm
repair/replacement coronary artery bypass grafting, and
transcatheter aortic valve implantation etc. With future
program expansion, the focus may also include providing support
for patients requiring level 2 coronary care. The
secondary focus will include collaboration with thoracic surgery
to provide high‑quality care to patients with pleural
space needs (i.e., pneumothoraxes, effusions, chest tube
insertion). Practice will include participating in the
coordination of care and services for medically complex patients,
as well as conducting physical assessments,
medical care planning and providing health education for patients
admitted to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences
Centre (TBRHSC). The NP will actively participate in patient
conferences and will link with community health care
providers and tertiary care to ensure continuity of medical care
for complex patients.

Education/Experience:
‑ Current unencumbered registration as a Registered Nurse in
the Extended Class with the College of Nurses of
Ontario
‑ Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certificate is required
‑ Active Professional Liability Coverage required
‑ Membership with RNAO or NPAO is preferred
‑ Minimum of 3 years recent nurse practitioner experience
during the last 5 years.
‑ Experience in the development, implementation and
evaluation of relevant advanced nursing practices is required.
‑ Experience in the development of strategies to build
capacity and improve health outcomes is required.
‑ Experience in the development of clinical guidelines and
protocols, promoting the use of research and
evidence‑based practice to guide patient‑centred care
is required.
Skills/Abilities:
‑ Demonstrated ability to integrate in‑depth knowledge
of advanced nursing practice and theory, health management,
health promotion, disease/injury prevention and other relevant
biomedical and psychosocial theories.
‑ Demonstrated knowledge regarding the nursing process and
its application, including the assessment, planning,
implementation and evaluation of nursing care.
‑ Demonstrated leadership abilities with high levels of
critical and logical thinking, analysis and/or reasoning to
identify underlying principles, reasons or facts.
‑ Demonstrated high levels of initiative, resourcefulness,
flexibility and adaptability.
‑ Demonstrated health assessment/clinical skills.
‑ Demonstrated ability to work effectively both
independently and in a collaborative practice model as a member of an
inter‑professional team.
‑ Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean
methodology for process improvement.
‑ Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in
Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint
and Outlook) and patient information systems.
‑ Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication
skills, both written and verbal.
‑ Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to
manage workload and adapt quickly to a fast‑paced,
dynamic work environment.
Assets:
‑ Certification in Primary Health Care, Cardiovascular
specialty preferred.
‑ Experience with cardiothoracic patients with complex
clinical needs (i.e. pneumothoraxes, effusions, chest tube
insertion etc.).
Salary Range: $67.170 to 74.460
