JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Registered Practical Nurse

Department: Regional Specialized Mental Health Program Clinical Rehabilitation Evaluation Unit

Northern Lights Lodge provides tertiary mental health services to individuals within the North East region who are experiencing serious mental illness requiring a longer and more intensive approach to assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation than is provided by district level inpatient services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • In-depth knowledge of serious mental illness from a biopsychosocial perspective
  • Knowledge of Recovery Oriented Practice Supporting Patient Choice
  • Knowledge of psychiatric pathology, psychiatric interviewing / assessment, pharmacological management and health teaching required
  • Demonstrated knowledge in applying the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation and case management (includes skills in assessment, treatment and rehabilitation)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)
  • Current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate asset
  • Certified in Medication Administration required with recent related experience required
  • Experience in Mental Health Nursing required
  • Knowledge of relevant acts and regulations e.g. Regulated Health Professionals Act, Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Act (PHIPA), Quality of Care Information Protection Act (QCIP), etc. 
  • Excellent working knowledge of College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice required

  • Excellent level of interpersonal skills required
  • Excellent level of written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to effectively assume a role as a collaborative member of the health team
  • Basic computer knowledge required
  • Good attendance and work record required
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work all scheduled shifts (days, nights, weekends)
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers and visitors
  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required.  All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
